Outpatient & Day Treatment Programs for Teens

Incorporating individual and group therapy, substance use awareness, and life skills training, our Outpatient Treatment offers specific treatment programs designed for teens who are experiencing challenges in their life. CFF’s outpatient services treat mental health and co-occurring substance use issues through a comprehensive, integrated approach on par with all of our programs. We determine the appropriate number of days of attendance and the right adolescent outpatient treatment for each client according to the specific needs of the individual and family. We are accepting new clients and conducting Level of Care Assessments either virtually or in person at our Center for Families’ Malvern and West Chester facilities.

What is CFF’s Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program?

Our teen IOP is for youth ages 13–18 who are experiencing moderate to severe mental health symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, mood swings, or behavioral challenges. These IOP groups provide more support and structure than teen outpatient counseling. This makes them an appropriate next step for adolescents who have completed a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), residential treatment, or inpatient psychiatric care. Alternatively, teens can participate in the Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program before trying a higher level of care.

How is CFF’s Outpatient Treatment for Teens Different from IOP?

Our Outpatient Treatment Program provides the same integrated, whole-person care as our Intensive Outpatient Program. The difference is that teens in our IOP typically participate in programming every afternoon following their attendance at school, whereas teens in our outpatient program may be at CFF fewer than five days a week. Our licensed clinicians work with the client and their family to determine what treatment program will best suit their needs, and to decide on the frequency of a teen’s participation in CFF’s outpatient services.

Our Outpatient Treatment Program’s Therapeutic Offerings

We heal families, not just teens. Our clinical staff is trained in multiple modalities, including Attachment-Based Family Therapy, a groundbreaking approach to healing the parent-child relationship. In addition to providing support groups and ongoing individual and family therapy sessions, our outpatient programming is the only local offering to integrate Adventure Therapy—taking the kids off site to challenge themselves, play, strengthen collaboration, and build self-confidence. Here’s a sampling of our core therapeutic modalities:

Individual Therapy

Clients attend weekly therapy sessions with their assigned therapist at our outpatient facility, designed to encourage positive communication and increased awareness of self.

Substance Use Awareness

This programming is designed for teens who meet criteria for a primary diagnosis of a mild or moderate substance use disorder and/or coupled with a secondary diagnosis of a mood, anxiety, or personality disorder.

Experiential Therapies and Groups

Teens participate in a variety of experiential therapies, including (but not limited to) music therapy, yoga, and offsite Adventure Therapy, providing exciting outdoor activities that support teens to grow their skills, teamwork, and self-esteem.

Attachment-Based Family Therapy

CFF practices ABFT, which aims to repair interpersonal ruptures and rebuild emotionally protective, secure relationships between our teens and their family members.

Life Skills

We help teens who have experienced trauma gain the skills and confidence they need to thrive, and ultimately grow into healthy, contributing adults.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sets CFF’s outpatient treatment for teens apart?

While CFF’s team includes some of Pennsylvania’s leading clinical and medical experts, it’s our compassionate treatment and beautiful setting—within 50 yards of a park in which to take walks and participate in experiential modalities—that create the warm and caring environment that sets CFF apart. Our outpatient programs are specifically tailored to the individual, based on evidence and experience, and driven by our dedication to helping your teen achieve the best possible outcome.

Does CFF’s Outpatient Treatment Program require residential treatment first?

Not necessarily. Center for Families healthcare advisors can help you assess the necessary level of care and determine the appropriate program for your teen and family.

What if outpatient treatment several days a week isn’t enough support for my child?

If outpatient treatment for teens doesn’t provide the appropriate level of care for your child or family, the next step is Intensive Outpatient Treatment, which offers programming five days a week outside regular school hours. CFF also offers a Therapeutic Day Program/PHP that includes our Therapeutic Day School, augmented by after-school programming focused on therapeutic work, experiential modalities, and group sessions.
